Former Californians Keith and Tina Paul say they were “born with wanderlust in our veins.” Now retired in the Andean World Heritage city of Cuenca, Ecuador, they travel five to six months of the year.

“Our big ‘ah-ha’ moment came while vacationing in Antigua, Guatemala, where we met some Americans living there. They called themselves ‘expats.’ Antigua is where we learned what an expat was and that you can live abroad in places that cost up to 80% less than the United States. Plus, living aboard is an adventure into itself. We immediately did the math, and ten months later, we were retired.”

After that trip, they researched retiring in foreign countries. They learned that by living abroad, people stretch their retirement dollars and get to experience a new and exciting lifestyle.
